The 33 is a Bio/Drama that tells the story of the 33 miners trapped for 69 days in a Gold and Copper mine. A solid acting performance from the entire cast, lead by Antonio Banderas as miner Mario Sepulveda, somewhat catches the emotion of this heroic story. Unfortunately the subplots that are intended to deliver this emotion tend to lose the drama that this true story is filled with. Some comedy relief moments are badly timed and take away from this truly inspiring story! With that being said, the story involving the time spent trapped underground in this mine are the most powerful scenes in the film. The solid acting from supporting cast members Rodrigo Santoro, Juliette Binoche, Kate Del Castillo, Lou Diamond Phillips and many others, do give this film just enough “life” to keep you invested for its 2hr plus duration. Still, the story telling of this event could have been handled differently to capture the emotional driven disaster that these brave 33 miners went thru. The most touching part of the film comes at the end credits when the real 33 miners are shown with subtitles explaining the aftermath of there ordeal. Although far from great this movie is a solid 5!
