Reports say Mel Gibson is in talks to direct the sequel to 2016’s superhero film Suicide Squad. Confirming these rumors was Gibson himself in an interview, which still just means Warner Bros. and Gibson have “talked”. Of course this means nothing, or maybe it does. I myself would welcome this news with open arms! Mel Gibson has been one of my most favorite actor turned directors since Clint Eastwood. With an impressive resume like Braveheart, Passion of the Christ, Apocalypto (my personal favorite), and most recent Hacksaw Ridge under his belt, this is just what Suicide Squad needs.
Suicide Squad was not a bad film, although I feel it didn’t live up to its potential. There were standout characters like Harley Quinn played by Margot Robbie who turned out to be a fan favorite (which was no surprise). Jared Leto as the new Joker got mixed reviews, I personally liked his portrayal of the psychopath. And Will Smith was surprisingly tolerable as Deadshot! The movie didn’t make much sense and had a side plot that detracted from the main story plot. This is why I believe Mel Gibson would be a perfect fit, he can do story just as well as action! This is what Suicide Squad needs, a good director to tell a solid story while still servicing the characters. So what do you guys think, is this the missing ingredient? Would you like to see Mel Gibson take on the superhero genre?
